What now?

What comes after AA?

For some people, the question does not appear at the beginning. It appears after AA has already worked.

What comes after AA is not one answer. It is not a new program, a new box, or a clever argument against the old one. It is a question that has to be lived with honesty.

For one person, the answer may be staying deeply involved in AA. For another, it may be building a wider life while remaining grounded in recovery.

After does not mean against

The word after can sound like rejection. It does not have to. A child grows after childhood without hating childhood. A bridge is crossed without insulting the bridge.

AA may have been the bridge back to life. It may have been the last house on the block. The next question is what kind of life you are willing to build on the other side.

The next ingredients

What comes after AA may include deeper spiritual practice, better relationships, business clarity, physical health, nature, family, service, therapy, meditation, creative work, or a more private relationship with recovery.

The form is personal. The principle is responsibility.

A private place to ask

Some questions are too nuanced for slogans and too personal for public debate. They need a quieter room.
